weak AMOC – weather AMOK

Ocean wave breaking in front of sunset

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is the system of ocean currents that includes the Gulf Stream. What its weakening may mean for our weather and seafarers is explained by the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in a new animation.

To stay on top of state-of-the-art ocean science in the UK, I subscribe to Ocean News, the news letter of the NOC, which brings highlights of the national and international collaborations into my email inbox.

For example, a new research programme into the ocean’s role in climate change mitigation has been launched this week. The Atlantic Climate and Environment Strategic Science (AtlantiS) is a collaboration between NOC, Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), the Marine Biological Association (MBA) and the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS).

For me, projects such as AtlantiS are a beacon of hope that investment and joining forces hold the answers for the big challenges we face.
