Songs of the Sea

We’re on board Pelican of London with a bunch of musicians and seasoned (tall) ship sailors. It’s sunny, the sky is deep blue and we’re waiting in Barrow lock for the evening tide…

…which will be Pelican’s shake down voyage after a long maintenance period in Buccleuth Dock.

The Kimber’s Men led the first shanties between climbing aloft and bracing the yards.

Kimber’s men Neil, John and Gaz in action while we’re waiting for the lock gates to open.

John brought out a foldable (!) guitar, another John a concertina, and whether from the great Pelican songbook, the ‘hard drive’ behind the brows or a smartphone, song filled a drifty afternoon to departure time.

Kimber’s Men amplified by the cavernous space underneath the pier at Devonshire Dock in Barrow in Furness
