Sailing Shanties Science

Detail of the foregaff on Pelican of London

A start to the sailing season with a difference:  Pelican of London will set sail to song…

I’m as excited as the crew to sail out of Barrow with the shanty singers Kimber’s Men next week.

Thanks to some very talented crew members (‘mean’ Pete, Tamsin, Jih, David, to name a few), I’ve worked to song aboard Pelican before. It’s great fun and I don’t want to get too scientific here, but singing the ‘right’ shanty means breathing in the rhythm required for the job, and breathing in unison with the other shipmates hauling the same line makes the job much more efficient.

Yes, I’ll be on board for the fun of it!

But of course, I’ll also be there to ‘sneak in’ some ocean science, taking every opportunity to engage our voyage crew in exploring the marine ecosystem and data collection for citizen science projects.

Watching dolphins play with our bow wave is (at least) as exciting as pulling ropes 😊.

It could be you: there are a few bunks left on this rare voyage, departing Barrow in Furness on 6th April and arriving in Liverpool a week later. Book via this link.
