Whether it is a ‘landmark win for nature‘, ‘ocean floor mapping‘ or the ‘sex lives of corals‘, there is something for everyone in the Ocean Science Highlights.

I always learn something new when I open the Ocean Science Highlights, which is one of the news feeds of the UN Ocean Decade on LinkedIn.

The end of June 2024 brought us news on the adoption of the Nature Restoration Law by European Union countries, which has ambitious targets for the restoration of land and sea areas in the EU within the coming decades.

My excitement about this is only dampened by the fact that the maritime nation of the UK is not party to this landmark legislation, which is set to benefit all aquatic systems, from groundwater, rivers and coasts to shelf seas and open oceans. Let’s hope that tomorrow’s incoming government will be open to learning from our European neighbours.

If you want to know more about the UN Ocean Decade and what can be achieved, collectively, for nature, subscribe to the Ocean Science Highlights.
