The reflections of Andrea Garfias about her time on board the tall ship Pelican of London are not only eloquent but also poignant in tumultuous weeks on the streets of England.
Andrea introduced groups of students of Gordonstoun International Summer School to a wide range of ocean science and technology, from microscopic plankton to the offshore wind power.

Here is what she wrote:
“During my first days as a Scientist in Residence on board the Pelican of London, I realized that scientists and sailors are more alike than one might initially think: both are driven by the power of curiosity. This curiosity drives them to discover the unknown by navigating uncharted territories, pushing the boundaries of human knowledge, and sharing their discoveries and inventions in an effort to shape a new path together.
After all, what is knowledge for if not to be shared?
For me, the Seas your Future science program was no different. More than a hundred students from all over the world came and went, each of them leaving with refreshed perspectives and smiles on their faces.
In the end, the future belongs to these new generations, and our job as scientists is to awaken their curiosity, empower them to question the world around them, and to point the way towards a brighter future. I feel grateful for having been able to give back a little of what science has given me, and hopefully to have inspired some of these students.
